Marcus Levy, Editor-in-Chief

Marcus is a first-generation Caribbean American from Danbury, CT. He graduated from Haverford College in 2015, earning B.A. in Spanish and a minor in Public Health. Afterward, he spent five years working for various public interest organizations, including a non-profit dedicated to helping refugees successfully apply for asylum in Mexico City and a law firm that focused on class action lawsuits against prisons and jails in California. At Michigan Law, he has competed on the Mock Trial team and served as both the Academic Chair and Interim Co-Chair for the Black Law Students Association. His interest in international law stems from his diverse upbringing and fascination with the process of resolving issues on a global scale. Following graduation, he will work as an Associate for the firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in their New York office. In his downtime, Marcus enjoys improving in the kitchen, following the NBA, and staying active.  

Cheyenne C. Kleinberg, Managing Editor

Cheyenne is originally from Shanghai, China, and completed her undergraduate studies at New York University. She is primarily interested in international commercial disputes. On campus, she is involved in the Vis International Arbitration Moot Team, the National and Michigan Law Asian Pacific American Law Students Associations, and the International Transactions Clinic. A native of big cities, Cheyenne is currently working on getting a driver’s license in her free time.

Avaskhan Assanaliyev, Managing Articles Editor

Avaskhan is a Michigan Grotius Fellow and an SJD student at the University of Michigan Law School, where he also completed a research scholar program in 2018. Avaskhan obtained his first degree in law from Kazakh Humanitarian Law University (formerly, Kazakh State Law Academy), where he was awarded a government scholarship for study of international law. Thereafter, he attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, as an exchange cadet under the U.S.-Kazakhstani international military cooperation program. In 2008, Avaskhan received an LLM from Duke. Avaskhan has worked as an adjunct lecturer at Kimep University Law School located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. His teaching activities include courses on M&A and International Banking Law. He is also a practicing lawyer with significant experience of work for international and local law firms.  

Julia Shults, Managing Notes Editor

Julia is a 3L from Austin, Texas. In undergrad, she majored in economics and Spanish at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. At Michigan, she is an oralist for the Jessup International Moot Court Team, a peer tutor, and a member of #WomenAlsoKnowLaw. Julia spent her 1L summer in the U.S. Court of International Trade in Judge Reif’s chambers, and she split her 2L summer between Covington in Washington DC and the U.S. Department of State in the Legal Advisors Office. In her free time, Julia enjoys baking NYT seasonal recipes and going to Michigan Football games.  

Lauren A. Fleming, Managing Online Editor

Lauren grew up in the Hudson Valley, New York, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies from Vassar College. Before law school, she worked as a paralegal in New York. In addition to working on MJIL, Lauren has spent her time at Michigan competing in the Jessup International Law Moot Court, participating in the UN Human Rights Practicum, and, this Spring, interning with the OHCHR in Geneva. Lauren spent last summer working in the London office of Skadden Arps and attending the Hague Academy of International Law’s Summer Courses. In her free time, Lauren enjoys learning foreign languages and watching period dramas.  

Tyler Loveall, Managing Executive Editor

Tyler Loveall grew up in Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Before law school, Tyler worked for the Peace Corps in Comoros as a secondary English education volunteer.  At Michigan Law, he was an oralist with the Vis International Moot Court and served as Vice-President of the Michigan European Law Organization.  He spent his 1L summer as a Civil Division intern at the Department of Justice and his 2L summer as a Summer Associate at Jones Day in Detroit.  

Eric Gripp, Business and Development Editor

Eric is a 3L from Woodinville, WA. He majored in history at the University of Washington with a focus on Russia. Last summer he worked at the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. After graduation, he will return to Washington State for a judicial clerkship. Ultimately, he aims to work for the federal government. Outside of law school, he is an avid Seahawks fan and has 13+ years of experience in graphics design and animation.
